About the European Hunting Foundation

The European Hunting Foundation is committed to supporting biodiversity and wildlife conservation through the dissemination of knowledge, educational initiatives, science-based projects, and research on sustainable hunting and conservation.

It aims to promote a better understanding of the sustainably bridge between human activities and the natural world, ensuring the careful management and preservation of wildlife for generations to come. Sustainable hunting and its ancient heritage, as deeply rooted in Europe’s culture, is fundamental to many important nature conservation initiatives.

Our Purpose

Our aim is to promote a harmonious balance between human activities and nature, advocating for sustainable hunting practices that benefit biodiversity and the environment.

By supporting scientific studies, research projects, and engaging in national and wider European projects, we aim to promote the conservation and sustainable use of natural resources. We are committed to understanding and raising public awareness of the role of hunting to nature and society, thereby improving a deeper appreciation for its values.

Our projects

The European Hunting Foundation is involved in a range of projects that reflect our multifaceted aims:

  • Scientific Research and Studies: We support research aimed at preserving the environment, biodiversity, and the sustainable use of renewable natural resources.
  • Wildlife Management: We focus on establishing knowledge-based wildlife management practices to maintain species-rich, healthy, and natural wildlife populations well-adapted to their environments. This includes research into wildlife populations, combating wildlife diseases, and conserving habitats.
  • Education and Public Awareness: Through educational initiatives, publications, and other mediated approaches, we promote a better understanding of the benefits of sustainable hunting to reverse biodiversity loss and restore natural habitats.

Through these objectives, the European Hunting Foundation is committed to ensuring the conservation of wildlife and the promotion of sustainable hunting practices, which contribute to reverse biodiversity loss and enhance rural life.

Education to promote awareness about sustainable hunting and nature conservation: European Hunters’ Campaign

In June 2023, the European Hunting Foundation supported a project to promote awareness about sustainable hunting and conservation. As a medium to achieve this, the project worked alongside the European Federation for Hunting and Conservation (FACE) and key contributors such as the German Hunting Association (DJV Deutscher Jagdverband).

The project landed during EU Green Week 2023, which had a major focus on environmental sustainability and citizens’ awareness-raising (in particular hunters), including the importance of nature restoration in Europe. This initiative was successful in education and awareness-raising about the importance of biodiversity conservation and sustainable use that aligns with national and international biodiversity objectives.

Research/Education on the social acceptance of hunting

This project, which started in June 2023, sets out to conduct research into the social acceptance of hunting. A first step of this project involved a survey in Germany and four other European countries to better understand the societal acceptance of hunting. This research is essential to our educational mission, but also underscores the importance of a science-based approach to sustainable hunting and wildlife management.

Research/Study – A Strategy for Sustainable Hunting and Conservation for 2027

Conducted during 2022-2023, the project comprised of a study to produce an in-depth analysis to identify key trends and challenges for sustainable hunting and conservation. A consultant was engaged to carry out semi-structured interviews with a wide range of stakeholders including environmental NGOs, decision-making institutions, and politicians to gather diverse perspectives.

The consultant also held a range of focus group style meetings to ascertain the external trends affecting sustainable hunting and conservation. This study and collaboration led to the creation of a new strategy for 2027, which helps to prioritise future initiatives.
